The artist
Hello,
My name is Crystal and art has been in my heart for as long as I can remember.
When I think about my childhood, i think back to kindergarten and while family gathered for thanksgiving. Every one of my art teachers embraced my mind with excitement as they struck me with questions that still inspire some of my artwork today.
In high school, one teacher wrote a letter to another, getting me into a Graphic Communications course. This was an amazing opportunity that changed the way I veiwed and valued art. Involvment in professional and competitive projects led to scholarships and cash prizes. In 2010 I placed Gold (1st) for Advertising Design in SkillsUSA, additionally winning the judges pin design during the same contest.
Initially out of high school I was freelance designing and didn't really know it. I wouldn't learn what I was up to until much later. At the time though, I was designing merch and albums for a couple of bands, a promotional organization, private venues and locals who wanted wooden silhouette animals for their yards.
While working a full-time job, I considered art a leisure activity so when I got pregnant, I stopped making art. Crazy, I know.
In 2016 I was Diagnosed with SLE lupus and would spend the following 3 years in a flare that had me praying for God to use me or take me. The pain was unbearable, I was a single mom with a toddler and no consistent or positive support system.
Sometimes I wonder if lupus is a disease of the spirit and here is why.
I wouldn't pick art back up again until 2018 when the community college I was inspired to go to for healthcare denied me. their argument was valid IN I had dropped out twice.
I needed change badly, so I appealed their declination. the school told me if I retook painting and passed with an A or better, I could come back. 2 weeks into painting, I dropped the healthcare programs and in 2021 I graduated with a degree in fine arts. That same summer, i received an update from my doctor that my lupus was in remission. God put me on this path. I don't paint these paintings for me. They are for you, for your growth, your journey. I am just the messenger allowing energy to flow through me.
For the last 8 years I have made it a point to make time, even if its 15 minutes every day to paint.
